प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा है कि चीन के साथ रक्षा क्षेत्र में आदान- प्रदान जारी रहेगा। डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह, चीन और कजाकिस्तान की पांच दिन की यात्रा से लोटते हुए विशेष विमान में संवाददाताओं से बातचीत कर रहे थे। उन्होंने कहा कि चीन के साथ पहले हुए समझौते के अनुसार सीमा पर तनाव खत्म करने की प्रक्रिया प्रगति पर है। उन्होंने कहा कि चीन ने आश्वासन दिया है कि वह भारत के साथ व्यापार असंतुलन कम करने के उपाय करेगा। प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि उनकी इस यात्रा के दौरान ब्रिक्स सम्मेलन और इससे अलग ब्राजील, रूस तथा दक्षिण अफ्रीका के राष्ट्रपतियों से मुलाकात में विभिन्न मुद्दों पर बातचीत हुई। डॉक्टर मनमोहन सिंह ने कल रात स्वदेश लौटने पर अपनी इस यात्रा को सफल बताया।
कजाकिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति और प्रधानमंत्री के साथ बातचीत के बारे में डाक्टर मनमोहन सिंह ने कहा कि इस दौरान दोनों देशों को परस्पर महत्वपूर्ण भागीदारी बढ़ाने का मौका मिला।
कजाकिस्तान भरपूर संसाधनों वाला देश है। मध्य एशिया में शांति स्थापित करने और विकास में यह प्रमुख भूमिका निभा सकता है। भारत इस अच्छे काम में कजाकिस्तान के साथ काम करने के लिए तैयार है। कजाकिस्तान के राष्ट्रपति के साथ मेरी बातचीत बहुत ही उपयोगी रही। हमने आपसी हित के लगभग सभी मुद्दों पर चर्चा की।

शिखर वार्ता के बाद प्रधानमंत्री डॉ० मनमोहन सिंह ने कहा कि दोनों देशों ने अपने संबंधों को बढ़िया आयामी बनाने का निर्णय लिया है और सूचना प्रौद्योगिकी उत्खनन, खाद्य विज्ञान और प्रौद्योगिकी और चिकित्सा उद्योग के क्षेत्र में आपसी संबंधों को और व्यापक बनाने को तरजीह दिया है। प्रधानमंत्री की यात्रा के समापन्न के बाद जारी संयुक्त वक्तव्य में दोनों देशों ने अंतरिक्ष के क्षेत्र में सहयोग बढ़ाने की घोषणा की है। संयुक्त वक्तव्य में कहा गया है कि दोनों देशों ने अफगानिस्तान की स्थिति की भी समीक्षा की है और कहा है कि आतंकवाद शांति और सुरक्षा के लिए बड़ा खतरा है। सुनील शुक्ल आकाशवाणी समाचार, अस्ताना, कजाकिस्तान।
परमाणु ऊर्जा का जिक्र करते हुए प्रधानमंत्री ने कहा कि वे इस बात से सहमत है कि यह स्वच्छ उर्जा का व्यावहारिक स्रोत है। उन्होंने कहा कि जापान में फुकुशिमा संयंत्र का संकट बड़े पैमाने पर परमाणु ऊर्जा के इस्तेमाल के बारे में चेतावनी है। सरकार परमाणु नियामक व्यवस्था को मजबूत करने के लिए संसद के मानसून सत्र में विधेयक लाने पर विचार कर रही है। पाकिस्तान के बारे में पूछे गए सवाल पर डाक्टर मनमोहन सिंह ने कहा कि अगर भारत और पाकिस्तान के बीच संबंध सामान्य होते हैं तो वे समझेंगे कि उन्होंने अपना काम पूरा कर लिया है।
प्रधानमंत्री ने प्रबुद्ध वर्ग के लोगों द्वारा अपनी आलोचना के प्रश्न पर कहा कि वे ऐसी बातों से अनावश्यक रूप से विचलित नहीं होते। उन्होंने यह भी कहा कि सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता अन्ना हजारे ने ग्रामीण विकास के क्षेत्र में काफी काम किया है। डाक्टर सिंह ने कहा कि अन्ना हजारे एक महत्वपूर्ण व्यक्ति हैं और वे उनका सम्मान करते हैं।
पश्चिम बंगाल में विधानसभा चुनाव के पहले चरण में कल होने वाले मतदान की तैयारियां लगभग पूरी कर ली गई हैं। इस चरण में उत्तर बंगाल के छह जिलों के ५४ निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों में वोट डाले जायेंगे। ये जिले हैं- कूचबिहार, जलपाईगुड़ी, दार्जिलिंग, उत्तरी दिनाजपुर, दक्षिण दिनाजपुर और मालदा। तीन सौ ६४ उम्मीदवार चुनाव मैदान में हैं। सत्तानवें लाख छयालीस हजार से अधिक मतदाताओं के लिए बारह हजार एक सौ ३१ मतदान केन्द्र बनाये गए हैं। हमारे दार्जिलिंग संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष मतदान सुनिश्चित करने के लिए कड़े सुरक्षा प्रबंध किए गए हैं।

कश्मीर घाटी में आज पंचायत चुनाव के दूसरे चरण में वोट डाले जा रहे हैं। बारामूला, गंदरबल, कुलगाम, कुपवाड़ा और बडगाम मे एक एक ब्लॉक में पंचों और सरपंचों के चुनाव के लिए मतदान जारी है। दो हजार १३९ उम्मीदवार चुनाव मैदान में हैं।
हमारे संवाददाता ने बताया है कि खराब मौसम के बावजूद बड़ी संख्या में लोग वोट डालने आए और दोपहर १२ बजे तक साठ प्रतिशत से अधिक लोगों ने वोट डाले।
जम्मू कश्मीर के आठ ब्लॉकों में आज पंचायती चुनाव के दूसरे चरण में भारी मतदान हुआ है। घाटी के उडी, आहुरा और लार ब्लाकों में दोपहर १२ बजे तक ६० प्रतिशत मतदान होने की खबर है। राज्य के कुल आठ ब्लॉकों में आज मतदान हुआ, जिनमें तीन जम्मू क्षेत्र में है। पंचायती चुनाव राज्य में दस साल के बाद १६ जगहों में हो रहे हैं। मुश्ताक अहमद तांत्रे, आकाशवाणी समाचार, श्रीनगर।
उच्चतम न्यायालय ने कहा है कि सरकार को अपने कर्मचारियों को दिये किसी भी प्रकार के वचन के बावजूद सेवानिवृत्ति की आयु सहित भर्ती नियमों में पिछली तारीखों से फेरबदल करने का पूरा संवैधानिक अधिकार है। न्यायमूर्ति मार्कण्डेय काटजू और ज्ञान सुधा मिश्र की पीठ ने कहा कि कर्मचारियों से किये गए वायदे को पूरा करने के लिए सरकार बाध्य नहीं है क्योंकि भर्ती नियम संविधान के अनुच्छेद ३०९ के तहत आते हैं और इस अनुच्छेद के तहत सरकार को पूर्ण अधिकार प्राप्त हैं। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने ये फैसला इलाहाबाद उच्च न्यायालय के उस निर्णय को खारिज करते हुए दिया है जिसमें कहा गया था कि सरकारी कंपनी बीएसएनएल कर्मचारियों से भर्ती के लिए किये वायदे में कोई बदलाव नहीं कर सकती।
देश में अवैध खनन की समस्या से निपटने के लिए किये गये उपायों की समीक्षा के वास्ते केन्द्र सरकार इस महीने के अंत में राज्य सरकारों की बैठक बुलाएगी। हमारे संवाददाता ने सूत्रों के हवाले से बताया है कि खनन सचिव एस० विजय कुमार इस बैठक की अध्यक्षता करेंगे। श्री कुमार ने राज्य सरकारों से कहा है कि वे पिछले महीने तक की गई कार्रवाई की रिपोर्ट प्रस्तुत करें। अवैध खनन रोकने के लिए राज्यों में समितियां बनाने के सुझाव और रेलवे, बन्दरगाहों और सीमा शुल्क विभाग के साथ तालमेल रखने के उपायों की भी इस बैठक में समीक्षा की जाएगी। इसके साथ ही खनन मंत्रालय लाइसेंस देने में हो रही देरी को कम से कम करने के लिए रियायतें देने से जुडे मामलों की भी समीक्षा करेगा।
२०१०-११ में प्रत्यक्ष कर और अप्रत्यक्ष कर की वसूली संशोधित अनुमानों से कहीं अधिक हुई है। ठोस आर्थिक विकास के इस वित्त वर्ष में सात लाख ९२ हजार करोड़ रुपये प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष कर के रूप में मिले हैं। ये पिछले वर्ष के संशोधित अनुमान सात लाख ८० हजार करोड रूपये से भी १२ हजार करोड़ रुपये से अधिक है। वित्त मंत्रालय के अनुसार प्रत्यक्ष और अप्रत्यक्ष कर की वसूली सात लाख ४५ हजार करोड रुपये होने का अनुमान था। इनमें से प्रत्यक्ष कर वसूली चार लाख ५० हजार करोड़ और अप्रत्यक्ष कर वसूली ३ लाख ४२ हजार करोड़ रुपये रही। अधिकारियों का कहना है कि अधिक कर मिलने से यह पैसा न केवल विकास परियोजनाओं पर खर्च हो सकेगा बल्कि इससे वित्तीय घाटा भी कम होगा।
अमरीका के दक्षिणी, मध्य और पूर्वी इलाकों में आए जबरदस्त तूफान में कम से कम २२ लोग मारे गए हैं। स्थानीय मीडिया की खबरों में कहा गया है कि कल उत्तरी कैरोलिना में तूफान की चपेट में आकर कम से कम पांच लोगों की मौत हो गई। एक व्यक्ति अलबामा की मारेंगो काउंटी में और छह की औटोगा तथा वाशिंगटन काउंटी में मृत्यु हो गई। कई अन्य जगहों से भी मौत की खबरें आ रही हैं। तूफान के कारण कई पेड़ गिर पड़े और बिजली लाइनें ठप्प हो गईं।
शिकागो में मौसम विभाग ने कहा है कि दक्षिणी राज्य मिसिसीपी और अलबामा में शुक्रवार को दो दर्जन तूफानों की खबरें मिलीं।
लीबिया में मिसराता में सरकारी सेनाओं और विद्रोहियों के बीच जोरदार लड़ाई चल रही है। कर्नल गद्दाफी की समर्थक सेना इस शहर पर फिर से कब्जा करने की भरसक कोशिश कर रही है। विद्रोहियों के एक प्रवक्ता का कहना है कि कर्नल गद्दाफी इस शहर के निवासियों के लिए संकट पैदा करने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं। विद्रोहियो का कहना है कि नैटो की सेनाओं को शहर में रहने वाले लगभग तीन लाख लोगों की रक्षा के लिए कार्रवाई और तेज करनी चाहिए। बैंगाजी जाने वाली सड़क पर भी भीषण लड़ाई चल रही है। ब्रेगा और ऐदाबिया शहरों से भी घमासान की खबरें हैं। फरवरी के बाद इन दोनों शहरों पर कभी किसी पक्ष का तो कभी किसी पक्ष का नियंत्रण होने के समाचार आते रहे हैं।
मलेशिया में कल सरावाक प्रांत में हुए एक महत्वपूर्ण चुनाव में सत्तारूढ़ गठबंधन ने फिर से दो-तिहाई बहुमत हासिल कर लिया है। इस चुनाव में विपक्ष को भी अपनी सीटें आठ से बढ़ाकर सोलह करने में कामयाबी मिली है। इस जीत को प्रधानमंत्री नजीब रजाक की लोकप्रियता से जोड़कर देखा जा रहा है। ग्रामीण विकास पर जोर दे रहे प्रधानमंत्री रजाक की पार्टी को ५५ सीटें मिलीं। अनवर इब्राहिम के नेतृत्व वाले विपक्षी गठबंधन को १५ सीटों से ही संतोष करना पड़ा। एक अन्य विपक्षी पार्टी डेमोक्रेटिक एक्शन पार्टी को १२ सीटें मिलीं।
अंतर्राष्ट्रीय प्रेक्षकों का कहना है कि नाईजीरिया में कल हुए राष्ट्रपति चुनाव के दौरान कोई बड़ी घटना नहीं हुई। प्रेक्षकों ने इसे नाईजीरिया में पिछले कई दशकों में हुआ पहला विश्वसनीय चुनाव बताया है। वहां पहले हुए चुनाव में भारी हिंसा और फर्जी मतदान के मामले सामने आए थे। इस बार के चुनाव में राष्ट्रपति गुडलक जोनाथन का मुख्य मुकाबला पूर्व सैन्य प्रमुख मुहम्मदु बुहारी से है।
सर्बिया की राजधानी बेलग्रेड में हजारों लोगों ने सरकार के खिलाफ प्रदर्शन कर जल्दी चुनाव कराने की मांग की है। विपक्षी नेता टोमा निकोलिक ने प्रदर्शनकारियों से कहा कि वे भूख हड़ताल शुरू कर रहे हैं और यह तब तक जारी रहेगी जब तक सरकार चुनाव की तारीखें घोषित न कर दे। देश की अर्थव्यवस्था के खस्ताहाल होने के कारण सरकार के प्रति विरोध बढ़ता जा रहा है। सरकार का कहना है कि वह समय से पहले चुनाव नहीं कराएगी क्योंकि इससे सर्बिया के यूरोपीय संघ में शामिल होने की प्रक्रिया धीमी पड़ जाएगी। नियमानुसार सर्बिया में अगले वर्ष के बाद ही चुनाव हो सकते हैं।
अल्जीरिया में राष्ट्रपति अब्देल अजीज बाओतेफ्लिका ने कई संवैधानिक सुधारों की घोषणा की है। शुक्रवार को टेलीविजन पर राष्ट्र को संबोधित करते हुए उन्होंने कहा कि वे देश के चुनाव कानूनों में बदलाव लाना चाहते हैं और संविधान की समीक्षा करना चाहते हैं। श्री बाओतेफ्लिका ने कहा कि वे भविष्य में स्वतंत्र और निष्पक्ष चुनाव कराये जाने के पक्ष में भी हैं।
अल्जीरिया में लोकतंत्र समर्थक आंदोलन के कारण राष्ट्रपति पर सुधार के लिए भारी दबाव है।
उधर राष्ट्रपति के संबोधन के दौरान ही राजधानी अल्जीयस से पूर्व सेना की एक चौकी पर संदिग्ध आतंकवादियों की गोलीबारी में कम से कम १३ सैनिक मारे गये।
जापान के क्षतिग्रस्त परमाणु संयंत्र के ऑपरेटर ने कहा है कि समुद्र में रेडियोधर्मी प्रदूषण कम करने के लिए ऐसे खनिज डाले जा रहे हैं जो रेडियोधर्मी पदार्थों को सोख लें। तोक्यो इलेक्ट्रिक पावर कंपनी ने कहा कि फुकुशिमा दाईची संयंत्र के पास शुक्रवार से जियोलाइट डाला जा रहा है। ये परमाणु संयंत्र पिछले महीने आए भूकंप और त्सुनामी के कारण क्षतिग्रस्त हो गया था।
उत्तराखंड में आज सुबह विभिन्न स्थानों पर हल्की बूंदाबांदी से तापमान में कमी आई है। हमारे देहरादून संवाददाता ने बताया है कि कुमाऊ मंडल के ऊंचाई वाले क्षेत्रों में कही कहीं बर्फबारी की भी खबर है।
मध्यप्रदेश में तापमान लगातार बढ़ रहा है। राजधानी भोपाल में तापमान लगभग चालीस डिग्री रहा। ४१ दशमलव ७ डिग्री सेल्सियस तापमान के साथ होशंगाबाद राज्य का सबसे गर्म स्थान रहा। हमारे संवाददाता ने खबर दी है कि इससे लोगों को खासी परेशानियों का सामना करना पड़ रहा है।

इधर राजधनी दिल्ली के अधिकतर हिस्सों में हल्की बूंदाबांदी के बाद आज सुबह मौसम खुशनुमा हो गया। मौसम विभाग ने कहा है कि आज सुबह तक शहर में डेढ़ मिलीमीटर वर्षा हुई। विभाग ने अगले २४ घंटों के दौरान भी बारिश और गरज के साथ छींटें पड़ने की संभावना व्यक्त की है।

The Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh has said, Defence exchanges with China will continue. Talking to reporters on board the special aircraft after his five day visit to China and Kazakhstan, Dr. Singh said, work is in progress to set up a mechanism to address the irritants along the border as per the agreements reached earlier. He said, China has assured India of steps to reduce trade imbalance with New Delhi.
(I did raise the question of the trade imbalance. President Hu Jin Tao recognized that there is the problem and I also specifically mentioned the two areas; one is Pharmaceutical Industry the other the IT happen to be sector where we feel the Chinese could do. But he did say that China has also a responsibility to tackle the problems of trade imbalance within.)
The Prime Minister said, wide range of issues came up for discussion in the BRICS meeting and at meetings with the Presidents of Brazil, Russia and South Africa on the sidelines of the summit. Dr. Singh returned home last night. He described his visit to the two countries as fruitful.
About his meetings with Kazakhstan President and the Prime Minister, Dr. Singh said, it was an opportunity for the two countries to upgrade the strategic partnership.
(Kazakhstan is a country blessed with vast potential. It has a key role to play in bringing peace and development to Central Asia. India would like to work with Kazakhstan in this noble endeavour. My talks with the President have been most productive. )
On supply of nuclear reactors to Kazakhstan, Dr. Singh said, no concrete decision has been taken so far. The two sides also decided to strengthen their ties in the areas of pharmaceuticals, IT, Mining, Fertilizer, Science and technology, Cyber security, Mutual legal assistance and cooperation in agriculture, Healthcare and medical services. The two countries will also cooperate in establishing research and medical institutes. Our Correspondent reports that they signed eight agreements yesterday.
In their statements after the talks the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the Kazak President Nazabavey have renewed their pledge to strengthen strategic partnership further. Dr. Manmohan Singh said that the two countries have decided to diversify the cooperation in pharmaceuticals, Information Technology, Mining, Fertilizer and Science & technology. Kazak President reaffirmed his support for India for permanent membership of UN Security Council. In the joint statement issued after talks the two countries decided to establish cooperation between space organizations of the two countries. On a question about Pakistan, Dr. Singh said he will consider he has done his job well if relations between the two countries normalise. In response to a question about attack by civil society members on him, Dr. Singh said he is not unduly disturbed. He said, he respects social activist Anna Hazare as an important leader as he has done a lot of work in rural development.
In West Bengal, stage is set for tomorrow’s first phase of Assembly election in the state. Preparation for holding the election have been almost completed. The first phase of Assembly election will take place in 54 seats covering six North Bengal districts of Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, North Dinjapur, South Dinajpur and Malda. Poll workers have also started for their destinations.
Altogether twelve thousand one hundred thirty one polling booths have been set up. Over 97 lakh voters will decide the fate of 364 candidates. Strong security measures have been taken to ensure free and fair voting. Twenty eight General observers, Nine Expenditure and three police Observers are continuously monitoring the situation. Our correspondent reports that inter-state and international borders along North Bengal have been sealed to prevent entry of unwanted persons.
Inter state borders with Assam, Bihar and Jharkhand have also been closed. In Jammu and Kashmir, despite inclement weather people in large number exercised their right to franchise in the second phase of Panchayat election today.
The Centre will convene a meeting of the state governments at the end of this month to review the action taken to check the illegal mining problem. Our correspondent quoting sources, reports that Mines Secretary, S Vijay Kumar, will chair the meeting of the Central Coordination-cum-Empowered Committee. Mr Kumar has also asked the state governments to submit the report on action taken till March. The meeting would also review the position regarding the constitution of high-level state committees and co-ordination with the Railways, Ports and Customs departments to crack down on illegal mining. Besides, the Mines Ministry would also review the cases related to the grant of mineral concessions to minimize delays in awarding the licenses. In a similar meeting held in last December, the Centre had asked departments like Railways, Customs and Ports to appoint nodal officers to check transportation of illegally mined minerals, so that an effective mechanism can be put in place. The illegal mining issue which rocked the Parliament and the Karnataka Assembly, forced the Centre to constitute an Inquiry Commission headed by former Supreme Court Justice M B Shah in November, 2010. The Commission is expected to submit its report in 18 months. The Supreme Court has ruled that the government has absolute Constitutional power to amend recruitment rules with retrospective effect including age of superannuation, irrespective of any undertaking given to employees. A Bench of Justices Markandeya Katju and Gyan Sudha Mishra in a judgement said, even if the government had given any undertaking to the employees, the same was not binding, as recruitment rules’ powers emanating from Article 309 of the Constitution, were absolute. The apex court passed the ruling while setting aside an Allahabad High Court judgement which held that public sector firm BSNL cannot change the rules of recruitment if the organization had given any prior undertaking to the employees.
At least 22 people have been killed as a powerful storm whipped up tornadoes on its third day across parts of the southern, central and eastern United States. Local media reports, at least five people were killed as tornadoes left a trail of destruction in North Carolina yesterday. One person was killed in Alabama’s Marengo County while six more died in Autauga and Washington Counties. Reports of deaths have also come in from several other places in the region. The storm toppled trees and power lines, tore roofs off houses and scattered tractor-trailers across highways.
The National Weather Service said in Chicago, two dozen tornadoes were reported in the southern states of Mississippi and Alabama on Friday, a day after 15 twisters struck in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas.
Fighting has intensified in the Libyan port of Misrata as government forces attempted to retake the rebel-held city after a two-month siege. A rebel spokesman said Col Gaddafi is trying to create a humanitarian crisis in the only rebel-held western city. Rebels who have been attempting to end Muammar Gaddafi’s four-decade rule say NATO forces should be doing more to protect its 300,000 residents. In the east, fighting has continued on the coastal road to Benghazi. Reports say, fierce battles on the road between Ajdabiya and the strategic oil town of Brega – which has changed hands half a dozen times since February – killed a number of rebels and wounded many more.
Tens of thousands of Serbians have gathered in the capital, Belgrade, to protest against the government and call for early elections. Opposition leader, Toma Nikolic, told the crowd he was beginning a hunger strike until the government agreed to schedule elections. Opposition against the government has been mounting as the economy suffers. Elections are not due until next year. The government says it will not call elections sooner, because that could slow the process for Serbia’s accession into the European Union.
In Algeria, suspected militants opened fire on an army post east of Algiers, killing at least 13 soldiers. Security officials and residents said at least one attacker was killed. The attack took place late Friday, just as President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was announcing a series of constitutional reforms in a speech to the nation.
The Japanese operator of a stricken nuclear plant said yesterday that it had started dumping a mineral into the sea that absorbs radioactive substances, aiming to slow down contamination of the ocean. Tokyo Electric Power Company, TEPCO, said it had begun dropping zeolite near a water outlet from the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which has been leaking radiation since it was crippled by last month’s quake and tsunami, from Friday. The mineral has wide-ranging industrial applications, including nuclear waste processing. Officials hope it will help to reduce the spread of radioactive materials from the plant into the Pacific, though the effectiveness of the measure was not yet clear.
The American Secretary of State, Ms. Hillary Clinton, has pledged support for Japan as it deals with the destruction of the last month’s earthquake and tsunami and the continuing nuclear crisis. Speaking during her visit to Tokyo, Ms. Clinton said the United States and Japan had agreed to form a public private partnership for reconstruction under the guidance of the Japanese government.
In Malaysia, the ruling coalition maintained its crucial two-thirds majority in a key election in Sarawak state yesterday but the opposition doubled its seats to 16 after a hard-fought battle. The vote was seen as a test of popularity for Prime Minister Najib Razak, who has dished out money for rural development, in what was described by some observers as the most crucial poll since the 2008 general elections.
International monitors say that the Presidential election, held yesterday in Nigeria, appears to have gone largely without incident. Observers say the poll could be Nigeria’s first credible election in decades. Previous polls have been marred by wide-spread violence and vote fixing. The main challenge to President Goodluck Jonathan is expected to come from a former military leader Muhammadu Buhari.
Back home, Delhites today woke up to a pleasant morning as mild showers drenched most parts of the national capital. According to the MET Department, the city has received 1.5 milimeter rains till this morning. The sun came out as the day progressed but still there is a possibility of rain and thundershowers during the next 24 hours. The maximum temperature was recorded at 36.4 degree Celsius while the minimum settled at 22.6 degree Celsius, a degree above normal. However, in Madhya Pradesh, with the upper air circulation system getting restricted to southeast areas, temperature soared again in most parts of the state, making the weather quite uncomfortable. In capital, Bhopal, the day temperature reached near the 40 degree mark along with humidity, making conditions quite oppressing for citizens. The maximum was recorded at 39.4 degrees, the highest in this season so far and a degree above normal mark. Hoshangabad that recorded 41.7 degrees of maximum temperature remained the hottest place in the state. Many other areas like Khajuraho, Naugaon, Sagar and Guna recorded maximum temperature of over 40 degrees. Sunil Kumar Tiwari reporting from Indore.
Delhi Development Authority, DDA will conduct a draw of lots for its latest housing scheme tomorrow. Nearly 16 thousand flats will be offered under the scheme which was launched in the month of November last year. According to the DDA official, over seven lakh applicants are vying for the flats located in areas including Vasant Kunj, Mukherjee Nagar, Dwarka, Rohini and other parts of the national capital. The results of the draw, will be uploaded on DDA website and published in newspapers by Tuesday.
The actual direct and indirect tax collection has reached 7 lakh 92 thousand crore rupees during the fiscal year 2010-11, exceeding even the revised estimate, on the back of strong economic growth. The collection is 12 thousand crore rupees more than the revised estimates of 7 lakh 80 thousand crore rupees during the last fiscal. According to the Finance Ministry, earlier the total Budget estimate for direct and indirect tax collections was Rs 7 lakh 45 thousand crore rupees. Of the total, the direct tax collection stood at 4.50 lakh crore while the indirect tax collection was 3.42 lakh crore rupees.
The nine member Team Arunachal including two female mountaineers Anshu Jamsenpa and Tine Mina, reached Everest base camp yesterday afternoon safely after nine days of hard trekking from the last remote village Lukla in Nepal. The team comprises members from five countries – four Indians, two Italians and one each from Canada, Iran and Sweden. Our Correspondent reports that Anshu Jamsenpa from Arunachal Pradesh is leader of this International Everest Expedition.
Anshu said on phone from Everest base camp that it is a big responsibility and a challenge to be a leader of an international expedition. She further added that she would try her best to lead all the team members to the summit though she would not like to compromise on any safety measures. Everest Base Camp is located at 17500 ft where climbers begin their actual expedition. From base camp, climbers typically train and acclimate by trekking and bringing supplies back and forth. Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and Afghan President Hamid Karzai have agreed to intensify both countries’ campaign against the Taliban. The two leaders met in the Afghan capital Kabul, where Mr Gilani was accompanied by military and intelligence chiefs. The Pakistani leader and Mr Karzai agreed to upgrade a joint peace commission to coordinate the fight against Taliban-led insurgents, in an agreement Mr Gilani described as “historical”. The announcement came just hours after a Taliban suicide attack on a military base near the eastern Afghan city of Jalalabad killed up to 10 Afghan and coalition soldiers. It was the latest in a series of attacks on police and army targets in the past week. Pakistan, which backed the Taliban government that ruled Afghanistan during the 1990s, will be crucial to any attempts to stabilize its western neighbour, although the two countries have had an uneasy relationship. Islamabad’s intelligence services are still believed to have close links with many of the insurgent groups they funded and supported during and after the war against the Soviet Union, including the Taliban leadership based in Quetta. Afghan government officials have frequently accused Pakistan’s military and its spy agency of trying to derail peace negotiations with Taliban leaders.
An Egyptian court has ordered the dissolution of former President Hosni Mubarak’s political party, meeting a demand of the pro-democracy movement. The court also ordered the liquidation of National Democratic Party, NDP assets, with the funds to be returned to the state. The disbanding of the party came days after the military council, which rules Egypt now, ordered detention of Mubarak for questioning about corruption allegations.
The World Health Organization says, its member states have reached an agreement on sharing Flu virus samples, in preparation for possible outbreaks of Flu pandemics. Under the agreement, pharmaceutical companies are expected to either share the formulas for new vaccines they develop or reserve some of the productions for poor countries. Several developing countries have refused to make samples of the Bird Flu virus available for research.
The British Defence Ministry has admitted that secret information about its nuclear power submarines was published on line by mistake. The Ministry had blacked out key sections of a report but because of a technical error, they could be read by anyone. The secret data revealed how British submarines would try to withstand catastrophic accidents.
World Bank President Robert Zoellick says the surge in global food prices is the biggest threat to the world’s poor. Zoellick said 44 million people have fallen into poverty in the last year because of rising food prices, noting the world is very close to a “full-blown crisis.”
